Royals manager ejected in 1st inning of Yankees game

The Kansas City Royals will have to finish Saturday’s contest against the New York Yankees without manager Matt Quatraro. He did arrive at the game to help coach Kansas City, but was quickly ejected from the matchup.

Reports indicate that Quatraro, who is 52 years old, was ejected in the middle of the first inning against the Yankees, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com. The exact reason was initially unclear, as his discussion with the umpires appeared to be calm at first. But as Quatraro turned to leave and go back to the dugout, the umpires tossed him out of the game.

“Manager Matt Quatraro had a discussion with the umpires in the middle of the first inning,” reported Rogers. “Not sure what it was about. It didn’t look heated, but then, as [Quatraro] turned away, it got heated fast. Now he’s been ejected.”

A few innings later, it was revealed that Quatraro was ejected from the game for allegedly complaining that the umpires missed the Yankees pitcher balk before a pickoff attempt at second base, per Jomboy Media. After what looked like a calm discussion at first, it turned into a heated spat.

This is Matt Quatraro’s eighth ejection since becoming the Royals’ manager in 2023. He typically stays calm and doesn’t explode all that often. But he certainly seemed to believe the umpires missed an obvious call on Saturday.

Perhaps he wanted to light a fire under his team, as Kansas City is tied for last place in the AL Central. Unfortunately, things went south quickly after his ejection, as the Royals fell to a 5-0 deficit to the Yankees through three innings.
