Rory McIlroy gets brutally honest on strong 1st round at US Open
The US Open has begun and Rory McIlroy — who already won the Masters this year — is off to a strong start. McIlroy is near the top of the early leaderboard on Thursday after shooting a 60 (-1) during his first round. The PGA Tour superstar commented on his performance after the round, via Golf Channel.
“I think overall, really good day,” McIlroy said. “Obviously it stings a little bit to finish the way that I did… But yeah, it was obviously a really tricky day and just a day to stay patient and hang in there. I hit enough good shots to give myself some chances.”
While it certainly was not the best Rory McIlroy performance we have ever seen, the 37-year-old still found ways to find success. He even made an admission about the shots he felt that he “missed” during the round.
“That’s sort of the name of the game around here is knowing where to miss it, and I missed it in pretty much all the right spots today,” McIlroy said.
McIlroy certainly had some good moments during the day as well, including an impressive eagle. He is currently tied for fifth overall on the leaderboard at -1.
Of course, it is too early to pay too much attention to the leaderboard. With that being said, making the cut will obviously be the primary goal for McIlroy and the other golfers on Friday.
McIlroy surely expects to make the cut, and with the way he has been golfing it would not be surprising to see him make a run at winning the 2026 US Open.
