Ronda Rousey takes down Gina Carano in under 20 seconds

The MMA showcase headlined by the bout between Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano ended in just 17 seconds, with Rousey securing a first-round submission via her signature armbar.

The featherweight contest (145 pounds) took place at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California, as the main event of MVP MMA 1, the first MMA card promoted by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions and broadcast live on Netflix. The fight concluded in Round 1 at 17 seconds after Rousey immediately closed distance, executed a takedown, moved into dominant position, and locked in the finishing armbar.

Rousey, 39, improved her career record to 13-2. The victory came nearly a decade after her departure from MMA in 2016-2017 following knockout losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes during attempts to regain her UFC title.

Carano, 44, entered the fight after a long absence from competition since 2009. She reportedly reduced her weight by 100 pounds after accepting the bout proposal in late 2024. Despite preparation for the 145-pound limit, Carano was unable to land a single strike before being taken down and submitted.

The event also marked Rousey’s return outside the UFC for the first time since her early Strikeforce days in the early 2010s. During her UFC run from 2013 to 2016, she defended the women’s bantamweight title six times after capturing the Strikeforce championship in 2012. Her career background also includes an Olympic bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

After the fight, Rousey confirmed her retirement from MMA, stating she will not compete again. Carano also indicated uncertainty about a future return to competition following the 17-second defeat.
