Nile Ranger completes fourth transfer in two years with seventh-tier club

Ex-Newcastle striker Nile Ranger has signed for non-league outfit AFC Whyteleafe.

The move sees the 35-year-old join his fourth club in just two years with his previous venture coming with Chatham Town.

Whyteleafe, who play in the Isthmian League Premier Division, announced the signing on X, although the length of his contract is yet to be disclosed.

The post read: “We are delighted to announce the signing of…..Nile Ranger.

“The forward joins us having had spells at; Newcastle Utd, Southend Utd, Kettering Town and more recently Chatham.

“Welcome to Whyteleafe, Nile.”

Ranger left Wellingborough Town in January before signing a short-term deal with Chatham until the end of last season.

Prior to that, he enjoyed spells at Kettering Town and Boreham Wood.

The journeyman had two stints at Southend United alongside tenures at Spalding United, Blackpool and Swindon.

A career of ups and downs

Ranger is best known for his time at Newcastle between 2009 and 2013.

His 51 appearances for the Magpies remains his highest number for any one club.

He netted just twice for the north east club but was loaned out to Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday during that time.

Ranger has been at the centre of a host of disciplinary issues throughout his career and run-ins with the law off the pitch.

He spent time in a Young Offenders Institute back in 2007.

He was also jailed in 2017 for fraud, while also being arrested on multiple occasions and having serious ‘disciplinary issues’ at EFL clubs.

The striker later admitted that he has ‘messed up’ during his career which prevented him from reaching his full potential.

He once boldly claimed that he would have been as good as Manchester City’s Erling Haaland if he’d have looked after himself.
