Ronda Rousey spills the secret on women’s success in MMA: ‘This is not the Olympics’
Arguably one of the most successful women in combat sports history, Ronda Rousey is a former Olympic bronze medalist and made her MMA debut in 2010. Following a successful run, she made her UFC debut in 2012, becoming the first female fighter to sign with the company.
Shortly after, Rousey started climbing the ranks and became one of the most feared fighters in the industry. However, after a series of losses, Rousey parted ways with MMA and made her WWE debut. Also, after experiencing a successful run there, Rousey left WWE in 2023. And almost three years later, she made her MMA comeback against Gina Carano at Jake Paul’s MVP [Most Valuable Promotions].
Making her return, she defeated MMA veteran Gina Carano under a span of twenty seconds. Later, at the post-show press conference, the now-retired MMA legend was asked about how others could replicate her success in the sport.
“I would say you have to promote as hard as you train,” Rousey said during her backstage press conference at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. “They just want to be able to show up and fight. I understand that, but this is not the Olympics. You don’t get to just show up and do your job and go home.
“Your job is to get people to watch you fight,” she continued. ‘Promotion is a form of storytelling. You have to figure out what is the story that the combination of me and this other person tell,” Rousey said. “You have to think, ‘What does this matchup bring to the table that is entirely unique?’ And get people to hook on to that. I think a lot of them don’t put any thought into (that).” [via Bloody Elbow]
While Rousey has now retired from MMA and wants to have more children, her recent opponent, Gina Carano, wishes to fight more based on her recent result.
