Roger Federer making return to Arthur Ashe Stadium at US Open, with a twist

Roger Federer will return to the US Open in 2026 for a special exhibition event at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with the U.S. Tennis Association confirming the announcement on Monday. The event, titled “Roger Federer: An Icon Returns to New York,” is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25, and will feature a doubles exhibition night match during US Open week before singles competition begins. The lineup includes Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi, and John McEnroe, with additional appearances and announcements expected.

Federer, 44, is a 20-time Grand Slam champion and the first man to reach 20 major singles titles. He also won 103 career titles before retiring in 2022 after a 24-year professional career. He is a five-time US Open champion and remains the only player in history to win five consecutive US Open singles titles, achieved from 2004 to 2008. His last appearance at the US Open came in 2019.

During his US Open peak, Federer won titles over major rivals and notably defeated both Agassi and Roddick in finals during his dominant run. He holds a 21-3 career record against Roddick and an 8-3 record against Agassi. One of his prominent victories includes the 2005 US Open final against Agassi. His 2004-2008 streak ended after a loss in the 2009 final to Juan Martín del Potro.

The 2026 exhibition will reunite Federer with his former rivals in a doubles format featuring legends of Flushing Meadows. Federer, Roddick, Agassi, and McEnroe are all expected to participate in the showcase event, with the USTA indicating more participants may be announced. The match is positioned as a celebratory night session event at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Federer’s post-retirement US Open connection includes a 2024 appearance as a spectator, where he received a standing ovation from fans. Renowned for his “Darth Federer” nickname during night matches in black attire, he remains closely linked to the New York crowd.

Federer is also scheduled to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in August in Newport, Rhode Island, with the ceremony set for August 29.

Tickets for the exhibition go on presale June 10 for US Open subscribers at 9 a.m. ET and US Open Insiders at noon, with general public sales opening June 11 via Ticketmaster and USOpen.org at 9 a.m.
