Rich Gannon puts Kirk Cousins’ signing with Raiders into perspective
The signing of Kirk Cousins by the Raiders is one of those moves that may look strange on the surface, but it could pay off in the long run for both Cousins and the team. The Raiders picked up the veteran quarterback during free agency after a couple of strange years with the Atlanta Falcons.
Cousins figured he would be the team’s No. 1 quarterback when he signed with the Falcons, but Atlanta drafted Michael Penix in the first round shortly thereafter. As a result, the job belonged to Cousins for just a short time before the Falcons wanted to let their top draft pick have his turn under center.
The Raiders have the No. 1 overall pick this year and are almost certainly going to select Fernando Mendoza, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from national champion Indiana. The vibe on this selection is much different and Cousins knows that.
He will give his all to win the job, but the Raiders will likely go with Mendoza if he proves ready to start. Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon thinks the addition of Cousins is a great move for the Raiders. He can do a solid job if he earns the start and he will also give Mendoza the benefit of his experience.
Gannon likes what he sees from Cousins. “He’s put a lot of time in to get better at his craft and he’s at the facility, he’s learning this new offense,” Gannon said. “He’s a guy that’s going to be totally committed.”
Cousins is headed into the 15th year of his career and he is a four-time Pro Bowl performer.
