Retired Ravens, Eagles star appears to make NFL comeback decision – with new team hinted

The Philadelphia Eagles made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday, and one slipped under the radar.

The Eagles signed edge rusher A.J. Epenesa and guard Michael Jordan and cut ties with a pair of reserves.

In an under-the-radar move, Philly also released edge rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Reserve/Retired list.

The move makes the three-time Pro Bowler a free agent, just months after he abruptly announced his retirement from the NFL.

There is no indication as to whether he will continue his career, but he is now free to sign with another team and make a stunning return, if he so chooses.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport appeared to suggest this was the likeliest outcome, writing that the decision was “an indication that he’s [Smith] open to playing in the right situation.”

Smith was a fourth-round selection by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2015 NFL Draft.

In addition to the Ravens, Smith also played for the Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions.

Smith has 70.5 career sacks to his name plus 343 combined tackles and 10 forced fumbles.

The 33-year-old Smith was signed by the Eagles in September 2025 after Philadelphia won their season-opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

The 2020 All-Pro logged 1.5 sacks in five appearances last season and provided the team with veteran leadership.

Then, he abruptly announced his retirement from the league.

“I knew this day would come — but now that it’s here, I’m feeling so many emotions I never expected,” Smith wrote on Instagram at the time of his retirement.

“This game has given me the opportunity to meet great coaches, compete alongside some of the best players ever, and represent some of the greatest organizations in the league.

Football has transformed my life and my family’s lives forever — and for that, I’m forever grateful.

“To the fans — the biggest thank you of all. To every fan from each organization I represented: thank you, thank you, thank you for everything!

“From wearing my jerseys, collecting my cards, sending letters, sharing your opinions (good and tough ones alike), and most importantly — showing love. I felt it all.

“As I step into the newest season of my life, please know this game has meant the world to me.

“The lessons learned on and off the field will stay with me forever.”

Despite not giving an indication as to whether he will return in 2026, a 2025 interview has provided a clue as to which team he would un-retire for.

“We both know where I want to be,” Smith told Tyler Dragon of USA Today at the 2025 BET Awards.

“Hopefully I can get back to Detroit [Lions] because the coaching staff and everybody in the front office are great.

When I’m there I feel like a leader and like I can influence the young guys and do great things.

Hopefully I can get back to where I want to be in Detroit.”
