Reds’ Eugenio Suarez lands on IL with oblique injury before Tigers game
The Cincinnati Reds are set to take on the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, as the club seeks its 18th win of the season. Unfortunately, Cincinnati will have to play the game, along with future contests, without Eugenio Suarez after he was placed on the IL.
Suarez, who is 34 years old, was placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain. The Reds also announced roster moves following Suarez’s injury announcement on Saturday.
“Placed on the 10-day injured list, retro to 4/24, infielder Eugenio Suarez (mild left oblique strain,” said the Reds. “Optioned to Triple-A Louisville (post-game 4/24), right-handed pitcher Kyle Nicolas. Recalled from Triple-A Louisville, outfielder JJ Bleday and right-handed pitcher Jose Franco.”
With the 13-year veteran out for at least the next 10 days, the Reds are likely to rely on a mix of players to fill the void in the designated hitter spot. Nathaniel Lowe should get more opportunities at the plate, while Sal Stewart and Spencer Steer are also listed in the DH role on the club’s depth chart. Lowe will step in as DH on Saturday against the Tigers.
Eugenio Suarez has played 25 games so far this season. He’s played decently well to begin the 2026 campaign, owning a .231 batting average and .300 OBP with 21 hits, three home runs, and 11 RBIs through 91 at-bats.
The Reds added the two-time All-Star to the roster in the offseason after signing him to a one-year, $15 million contract in February. Cincinnati brought him in to improve the offense, as the club hopes to make a deeper run in the playoffs this year.
