Red Sox announcer apologizes after ‘threats’ over Jazz Chisholm Jr. comments

The Boston Red Sox lost three of four games to the New York Yankees over the weekend. During the series, Red Sox announcer Will Flemming got himself into hot water. Flemming made comments about Jazz Chisholm of the Yankees, calling him a “bush league” player and going as far as to suggest picking a fight with him.

Now, Flemming has taken to social media to apologise for his comments.

“Since I have been receiving nonstop calls and threats, I felt like it was important to hop back on here and say: My comments during yesterday’s broadcast crossed a line. I’m emotional and a fan at heart and that bled into the broadcast,” Fleming posted on X, formerly Twitter. “I meant no disrespect to the Yankees players or organization. I could and should have used different words. These rivalry games get me fired up; I apologize for letting the emotion of the moment get the best of me.”

Flemming has done play-by-play for WEEI Red Sox Radio since 2019. Prior to that, he was the play-by-play voice for the Pawtucket Red Sox of Triple-A.

The situations that caused the outburst from Flemming happened in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 16-1 rout of the Red Sox. The Yankees had a 7-1 lead, with Chisholm on second base and no one out in the inning. No member of the Red Sox was holding Chisholm on second base. He took off for third, which was a surprise for the Sox. It was the 40th stolen base of the year for Chisholm after he had just stolen second base.

The Red Sox are 74-63 on the season, which places them in third place in the AL East. They also control the second wild card spot in the American League. The Red Sox are currently facing the Seattle Mariners in the first game of the series and are down 7-5 heading into the seventh inning.
