LaVar Ball reveals wild reason Nikola Jokic wouldn’t fit his system

Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic is the best big man in the NBA currently, and is arguably the league’s best player. However, if LaVar Ball, the famed father of Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo, had his way as a coach, the three-time MVP would not even see the court.

As crazy as it sounds, LaVar Ball made the case during a recent segment of his show, ‘The LaVar Ball Show,’ alongside former NBA star Dwight Howard, that because his ideal system is a fast-paced, up-tempo type of style, that Nikola Jokic would not fit that type of play. But craziness aside, Ball did give the Nuggets’ star his props.

“You’re talking about Joker, that boy can play,” Ball said. “He can play. But in the system I have … he’ll never be seen. We’re gonna run … everybody’s gonna be running. And if you don’t have a big man who’s athletic enough to run and catch lobs, it’s over. I’m not gonna wait for you to come down and be like, ‘hey, post up and give it to me.’”

It should be noted that Jokic, can, in fact, play at more of an uptempo pace, and he is sometimes the one who starts the break with his rebounding and his elite court vision and passing.

This past season, Jokic appeared in 65 games for the Nuggets at a little over 34 minutes per game. He’s averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, 10.7 assists and 1.4 assists with splits of 56.9 percent shooting from the field, 38 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 83.1 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
