The Rams reportedly turned down the opportunity to speak with Garrett days before the trade went down.

“A source told ESPN that the Browns granted the Rams permission to speak with Garrett in the days before the trade,” ESPN wrote. “The Rams declined the conversation because they were comfortable with the deal — as one team source said, “you’re buying a blue-chip stock” and there’s not a lot of guesswork with that.”

One reason why the Rams were worried was because Garrett has a no-trade clause in his contract. Rams GM Les Snead was worried that both sides would put in a lot of work just for Garrett to say no.

Ultimately, it seems that LA simply did not want any additional unknown variables. They just wanted to get the deal done as soon as they could.

“The Rams didn’t want anything — not even a phone call — to jeopardize the deal,” ESPN added. “A source said the Rams wanted to make sure they could tell [Jared] Verse in person that he was going to be traded.”

Verse took the news like a professional when talking with McVay before the trade. However, he later revealed that the trade was a big surprise and made him feel upset.

Fortunately, the Rams pulled off the trade and Garrett is happy to join a Super Bowl contender. All’s well that ends well.
