Rams QB Ty Simpson reveals heartwarming message from Matthew Stafford’s wife after being drafted

The Los Angeles Rams acquired the quarterback of the future on Thursday night, after selecting Ty Simpson with the No. 13 pick overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. During his introductory press conference, the former Alabama Crimson Tide signal caller claimed he received a heartwarming message from Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly.

Simpson admitted he has not yet heard from Stafford himself, according to Arash Markazi of the Sporting Tribune. The new Rams QB did say he is excited to talk with the 17-year veteran, but for now, Kelly Stafford welcomed Simpson to Los Angeles.

“Kelly has actually texted me on Instagram and welcomed me and told me to hit her up if we need anything, but I can’t wait to talk to Matthew,” said Simpson. “I’m super ecstatic because I just want to pick his brain.”

After drafting the 23-year-old quarterback, head coach Sean McVay and the Rams made it very clear that Matthew Stafford is the starter in Los Angeles for however long he sees fit. With Stafford being 38 for the upcoming season, L.A. seemingly felt it was necessary to find the eventual replacement now, rather than later.

Ty Simpson is viewed as a quarterback who needs time to develop before taking over as a starter, which puts him in the ideal situation with the Rams. He played for Alabama for four seasons, but only stepped up as the starter in his final year with the program. Simpson ended the 2025-26 campaign with 3,567 passing yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 64.5% of his pass attempts.
