Rafael Devers throwing a fit about 9th-inning pinch runner draws Giants’ fan criticism

Rafael Devers has not done much over the last 14 months to show that he is much of a team player. His tenure with the Boston Red Sox came to an end in large part due to his refusal to pick up a first baseman’s mitt and take up the position when requested. Since coming to the San Francisco Giants, Devers has struggled to find his best form but he has not enamored himself to the team or its fan base with his production or attitude.

Devers pulled something of a fit on the field Sunday as the Giants battled the Miami Marlins. The Giants were trailing the Marlins 2-1 in the top of the ninth and Devers led off the inning with a base on balls. The Giants elected to use Jonah Cox to pinch run for the slowish Devers. That move got under Devers’ skin and he waved Cox back towards the dugout, as if he was the decision maker in the process.

As Cox got closer to first base, Devers’ actions were more aggressive, to the point where Cox stopped in his tracks outside of first base. At that point, the umpires said that the move had been made by Giants manager Tony Vitello and Devers finally left the base and Cox took his position on the field.

The move did not help the Giants as they went quickly in the top of the ninth. Willy Adames ended the game by grounding into a double play.

Multiple Giants fans criticized Devers for his reaction with their posts on X. Several said it made Devers and the team look bad, while making Vitello look weak in his first year as manager of the team.
