Pistons make history with suffocating Game 2 defense vs. Cavs
All season long, the Detroit Pistons built their contender image on one thing: their defense. Boasting one of the most versatile and tenacious defenses in the league, Detroit earned the number one seed in the East thanks to its lockdown defense. However, many wondered if that defense would translate to playoff success.
It’s looking like the Pistons are riding their defense to a deep playoff run. They’re matched up against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round of the 2026 NBA playoffs. From the start of the first quarter, Detroit showed their elite defense. They held Cleveland to just 18 points in the first quarter, their best defensive opening in recent memory, per ESPN Insights.
The Pistons capitalized on the Cavaliers getting rattled by their defense, scoring 25 points to take an early lead in the first quarter. That lead ballooned to as big as 11 by halftime, However, Cleveland came alive in the second quarter, getting the lead down to four points by the start of the fourth quarter.
At the time of writing, the Pistons are holding a five-point lead at the midway mark of the fourth quarter. Tobias Harris is leading the team with 19 points and six rebounds, while Cade Cunningham has a double-double with 20 points and 10 assists. Donovan Mitchell has been the main problem for the Pistons, the star guard scoring 27 points on 50% shooting against a tough Detroit defense to keep the Cavaliers in the game. James Harden has been limited to just 10 points on 3-13 shooting with three turnovers.
