Phillies’ Don Mattingly sings Brandon Marsh’s praises after Giants series
As the Philadelphia Phillies completed the sweep of the San Francisco Giants, the ball club, led by interim manager Don Mattingly, is seemingly going in a better direction since the firing of Rob Thomson. With the Phillies having back-to-back walk-off wins against the Giants, one key factor in the victories has been the continued impressive play from Brandon Marsh.
Marsh has recorded a .303 batting average to go along with four home runs and 17 RBIs, and his ande in the second game of Friday’s double-header led to him scoring the tying run in the ninth inning, which led to a 6-5 win in extra innings. For Mattingly, he would speak on Marsh becoming an “everyday guy,” and how, when he was the manager for the Miami Marlins, he wanted him to be on the team.
“I’ve always felt like he’s a really good hitter,” Mattingly said, via On Pattison on X, formerly Twitter. “Seen him when he was young, even in the fall league, and a guy that I actually in Miami, we tried to trade for him a couple of different times, we just couldn’t get it done. But he’s another guy that hits, and I think it’s gonna keep getting better.”

Don Mattingly on the Phillies’ growing confidence in Brandon Marsh
It remains to be seen how Marsh is utilized by Mattingly through the rest of the Phillies’ season, though Marsh is usually used in the middle of the batting order after the meat of the lineup. Mattingly spoke more about the confidence that Philadelphia is having in the 28-year-old.
“Obviously, we’re getting more and more confidence in him, and we’re gonna, you know, give him a little breather. We’re not gonna run him into the ground running into four games on the turf in Miami, but he’s a guy that’s, you know, earning more and more at-bats. He’s a guy that’s kind of becoming more of an everyday guy,” Mattingly said.
At any rate, Marsh and the Phillies look to continue to get better with the team preparing for a four-game series against the Marlins, starting Friday.
