Penguins’ Sidney Crosby sounds off on potential final game vs. Alex Ovechkin
The Pittsburgh Penguins have clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sidney Crosby and his teammates will have a chance to compete for a Stanley Cup this spring. Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are still fighting for their playoff lives. But they came up with a big win over the Penguins on Sunday.
Ovechkin earned an assist during the win on Sunday. It was an emotional contest, as it could be the final home game for Ovechkin. The Capitals legend did not confirm what his future plans are after Sunday’s win. But Crosby wanted to take part in this contest in case it was the last time he saw his rival on the ice.
“Yeah, definitely,” Crosby said, via The Athletic. “I think, for a lot of reasons, you want to keep playing, just because of the potential. And then obviously, we don’t know. So, I think just for that fact, definitely wanted to be in it.”
Ovechkin and Crosby had an intense rivalry during the 2010s. Crosby won three Stanley Cups with the Penguins from 2009 until 2017. In many playoff runs, Pittsburgh went up against Washington ahead of the Stanley Cup Final.
In 2018, Ovechkin and his teammates got their revenge. They eliminated Crosby and the Pens en route to making the 2018 Stanley Cup Final. Washington defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in that final, winning the Stanley Cup in five games.
There is a chance these two face each other in the postseason in 2026. However, there is still work for the Capitals to do before it happens. Fans should continue watching Washington’s results over the next few days as the season draws to a close.
