Paul Finebaum goes scorched earth on NCAA for Texas Tech football’s Brendan Sorsby ruling
With the NCAA denying eligibility to Texas Tech football’s Brendan Sorsby for the 2026 season due to his gambling scandal, analyst Paul Finebaum would make his thoughts known about the subject. While the school is standing firmly behind the Texas Tech quarterback in Sorsby, Finebaum calls out the NCAA for its ruling,
Speaking on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Wednesday, Finebaum would say that while he believes that Sorsby should’ve been suspended for a few games, denying his eligibility is “wrong.” Finebaum would go on to express why, with this decision, the NCAA is the “most hypocritical organization in the history of mankind.”
“I think he should have been suspended for a couple of games, but to keep him out for the whole season, I think, is wrong,” Finebaum said. “And while what he did on paper is terrible, we’re talking about the NCAA, the most hypocritical organization in the history of mankind, coming down on somebody for gambling while they have their own side gambling deals and while gambling is pervasive everywhere. So, three-game suspension, perhaps. Keeping him out for the whole season is wrong.”

School appealing decision with Texas Tech football’s Brendan Sorsby
Speaking about the NCAA denying Sorsby for his 2026 eligibility and playing football with the Texas Tech football program, school president Lawrence Schovanec released a letter announcing the appeal of the decision.
“We believe that given the facts and the context of Brendan’s case, the NCAA’s ruling should be reversed or modified,” Schovanec wrote. “As a generation of college athletes face the legalization and rapid proliferation of sports betting in our country, gambling addiction is rising to the point of epidemic among college-aged men in particular. The NCAA’s stated mission includes “fostering [student-athletes’] lifelong well-being”, and they have claimed their goal is to promote a “culture of care” for student athletes’ mental health. Gambling addiction is a clinically recognized behavioral disorder, as defined in the DSM-5.”
At any rate, it remains to be seen if the appeal by the Red Raiders will work, leading to Sorsby playing football for the 2026 season.
