Patriots’ Drake Maye shuts down wild question with ‘pause’ demand

The New England Patriots are back in the building for OTAs as they look to do the early work to build their team chemistry before the season. Drake Maye was present, and he’ll have his heights set on leading his team back to the Super Bowl with the hopes of winning it all this time.

Instead of asking Maye how he plans to do that, a reporter had another thought. During media availability, Maye was asked if he had gotten “thicker with two Cs.”

Maye had to collect himself before answering the question.

“Say that one more time?? That’s a pause if anything. That’s NOT the way to put it,” Maye said.

The better way to ask that question was if he had gained weight, but it seemed as if he wanted to get into his millennial bag and spice things up. Unfortunately, it didn’t land the way he wanted.

Outside of whether he’s gotten thicker, there is real optimism that Maye will improve this season, and it’s mostly because of the comfort of Josh McDaniels’ system.

“I think the underrated thing he has this year is obviously going into Year 2 in the system is big,” Hunter Henry said via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “This system demands a lot on the quarterback position. To have a whole offseason to be in the same scheme and really build on what he did last year, I’m excited to see the jump and progress he can make on a day-to-day basis.”

In his first year under McDaniels’ system, Maye showed that he could make any pass at any time, which led the Patriots to a lot of success. He should come into year 2 with even more confidence, and teams are going to make sure to key in on him with last year’s film in their pocket.
