Patrick Mahomes’ historic contract draws powerful statement from Chiefs CEO
QB Patrick Mahomes has become synonymous with the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes is recovering from a torn ACL and both he and the Chiefs are hopeful that he can play in Week 1. Kansas City doubled down on their commitment to Mahomes by inking him to a two-year extension on Wednesday.
Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt released a powerful statement after news broke about Mahomes’ latest extension.
“Over the last decade, Patrick has become one of the most iconic, beloved sports figures of all time…,” Hunt wrote on Wednesday, per the team’s Instagram account. “He has helped lead our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships, he has been instrumental in shaping the Chiefs brand and putting Kansas City on the world stage, and on top of it all he has been an outstanding role model in the community.”
Mahomes crossed the $500 million threshold with his latest extension. The new deal will add two years to his contract and gives Mahomes an average annual value of $64 million starting in 2027.
Now the Chiefs have Mahomes under contract through the 2033 NFL season, when he will be in his late 30s. At this rate, he will almost certainly finish his NFL career in Kansas City and only play for one franchise throughout his career.
Hunt and the Chiefs would not have it any other way.
“Patrick is a generational talent and an elite human being, and I’m so excited he will continue to lead our team into the future,” Hunt concluded.
Hopefully Mahomes can get healthy and play like his old self at some point during the 2026 season.
