Panthers’ Dave Canales reveals when mysterious Haynes King injury happened vs. Cardinals

After an epic performance from Carolina Panthers quarterback Haynes King in the 33-30 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame preseason game, the signal-caller is now dealing with a hamstring injury. With King looking to be the Panthers’ backup quarterback to Bryce Young, beating out Kenny Pickett, that pursuit could be stalled with the hamstring issue, as head coach Dave Canales reveals when the injury was sustained.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Canales said that King’s hamstring injury came on the game-winning rushing touchdown that the quarterback scored when time expired. While Canales is certain that King is missing the next preseason game on Aug. 15 against the Buffalo Bills, Carolina will re-evaluate him afterward.

“Yeah, I mean, from what I understood, it was on that last play where he kind of like lunged in and dove for the goal line and really gave everything he had, literally,” Canales said, according to Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer. “And so, you know, got his hamstring there, and we’ll just keep evaluating him on a weekly basis. I do not see him coming back for this game for sure. We’ll reevaluate him on the following week to see…”

Haynes King shines in Panthers’ Hall of Fame game win over Cardinals

In the Panthers’ win over the Cardinals in the Hall of Fame game, King would throw for 180 yards, completing 21 out of 34 pass attempts to go along with two touchdowns. King also rushed for 39 yards and a touchdown, which ended up being not only the play that won the game for Carolina, but where he suffered the hamstring injury.

With King’s injury, Kaye reports that the Panthers expect to add quarterback Kyle Trask to the team, as he has familiarity with Canales, as both were with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023.

“The Panthers are expected to add former Bucs QB Kyle Trask following Haynes King’s hamstring injury, per a league source,” Kaye wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “He also worked out for the team last week.”

It remains to be seen when King is fully healthy.
