Padres outfielder Nick Castellanos’ blunt 2-word reaction to reporter’s question about HR bat
The San Diego Padres took the final game of their series with the St. Louis Cardinals, splitting the four-game set. Once again, Fernando Tatis Jr. did not hit a home run, continuing his home run drought to start the season.
While Tatis does not have a home run, his bat has one. In the bottom of the ninth, Nick Castellanos tied the game with a two-run home run. He was not using his own bat, though, as he used the one of Tatis after breaking his. After the game, the Padres hero was asked about hitting a home run with Tatis’s bat, and Castellanos delivered a blunt response, per Talkin’ Baseball.
“Are you going to let him hear the end of it that you hit a home run with his bat before he did?” the reporter asked Castellanos in front of his locker.
“That’s rude,” Castellanos delivered bluntly.
It was just the second home run of the season for Castellanos, who has not hit well overall this year. He is hitting just .192 with a .231 on-base percentage, but does have 13 RBIs this year. Meanwhile, Tatis is hitting .243 on the year, with a .319 on-base percentage, and 15 RBIs. Still, he has yet to go yard this year.
Tatis has hit 20 or more home runs in each of the last four seasons and in five of his six overall. The only time he did not hit 20 home runs in a year, he hit 17 while playing in 59 games in 2020. In 29 games so far this year, he has not hit a round tripper, giving him 162 plate appearances in a row without going yard, the longest of his career.
Still, the Padres are winning games, and Tatis is finding a way to be productive. The Padres are 24-16 on the year, which ties them for the best record in the NL West.
