Padres’ Gavin Sheets walks off the Rockies with a 3-run homer

The San Diego Padres continued their trend of late-inning heroics Friday night, defeating the Colorado Rockies 5-2 at Petco Park on a walk-off three-run home run from Gavin Sheets. One night after Xander Bogaerts smacked a 12th-inning grand slam, Sheets followed it up with a clutch ninth-inning blast, giving the team consecutive walk-off home runs for the first time since June 2024.

Sheets accounted for two of San Diego’s runs earlier in the game as well, finishing with a pair of home runs. He opened the scoring in the fifth inning with a leadoff shot off Colorado starter Tomoyuki Sugano, sending a 416-foot drive into right-center field for his first homer of the season. Later in the ninth, he ended the game by crushing a 99.6 mph four-seam fastball from Juan Mejia (0-2), a projected 434 feet after a leadoff single by Jackson Merrill and a walk to Manny Machado.

Luis Campusano added to the Padres’ offense with a solo home run and a double, giving him five extra-base hits over his last five games. His homer, hit at 106 mph, pushed San Diego’s lead to 2-0 in the fifth.

Starting pitcher Walker Buehler came up with his best outing since joining the Padres, throwing six scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out four without issuing a walk. He completed his outing on just 67 pitches, earning his first win with San Diego after signing a minor league deal in February.

The Rockies tied the game in the eighth inning against Adrian Morejon, who allowed two runs on four hits. Hunter Goodman drove in a run with a two-out single before scoring on a hit by Jordan Beck.

The Padres’ bullpen stabilized the game late, with Mason Miller (1-0) striking out the side in the ninth inning for his third consecutive scoreless appearance. Miller has struck out 19 of the 24 batters he has faced this season.

With the win, San Diego has positioned themselves to secure the four-game series on Saturday, when German Marquez is scheduled to face Ryan Feltner.
