Padres add Jake Cronenworth to IL ahead of Giants clash
The San Diego Padres are in the middle of a rough stretch of baseball after beginning the year very hot. Despite the rough patch, San Diego remains 20-14 on the year as they head into Game 2 of the series against the San Francisco Giants.
Ahead of the clash, the Padres announced a few roster transactions.
“We have recalled INF Sung-Mun Song from Triple-A El Paso today and placed INF Jake Cronenworth on the 7-day IL (concussion symptoms). Additionally, LHP Yuki Matsui has been reinstated from the 15-day IL and LHP Kyle Hart has been optioned to El Paso.”
The Padres are finally calling up Sung-Mun Song. Song was a free agent signing this past offseason, and he gives the team an infielder with an elite glove and a solid bat. He was banged up earlier this offseason and during spring training, but Song is going to be a part of the Padres’ future. Now that Jake Cronenworth is on the IL, Song will get his chance to shine.
A few weekends back, for the Mexico City Series, the Padres added Song to the roster as the 27th man. He appeared as a pinch runner, but did not get an at-bat. In 25 games for El Paso, Song hit .293 with one home run and 15 RBIs. He owns a .718 OPS, has 29 hits, and three doubles. San Diego is hoping he can do a better job of getting on base. Cronenworth has just a .144 average and .468 OPS on the season.
Yuki Matsui is back with the Friars for the first time in 2026. He’s been a valuable bullpen piece since he signed with San Diego a few years back. Kyle Hart had been the long reliever for SD, but now he heads back to Triple-A, giving SD another late-inning reliever.
