Oilers rumors: Edmonton could sign 2-time KHL champion this summer

The Edmonton Oilers could look to add another young forward to their organization this offseason following Maxim Berezkin’s second straight Gagarin Cup championship with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in the KHL. The 24-year-old winger has become a growing topic of discussion after completing another lengthy season in Russia, where he continued to make a name for himself as a reliable professional player.

Berezkin, a 2020 fifth-round draft pick by Edmonton, played a crucial role during Lokomotiv’s championship run. He scored five goals and picked up three assists for eight points across 22 playoff games. His biggest moment came in the conference final against Avangard Omsk, where he netted the series-clinching double-overtime winner that sent Lokomotiv to the Gagarin Cup Final.

During the 2025-26 regular season, Berezkin produced seven goals and 32 points in 64 games. While those offensive numbers dropped from the previous campaign, when he recorded 15 goals and 42 points, his overall game and physical style continued to draw attention. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing around 211-212 pounds, Berezkin has built a reputation for his size, defensive awareness, versatility, and physical play.

Berezkin is represented by agent Dan Milstein, and Edmonton could now explore bringing him to North America on an entry-level contract, according to Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer. With the Oilers searching for younger and more affordable roster options, Berezkin may fit into the organization’s plans as they evaluate changes to their forward group.

Edmonton has already attempted to inject youth into its lineup through additions such as Matt Savoie and Isaac Howard, and Berezkin could become another option for the 2026-27 season. Though he is not projected to become a high-end NHL scorer, his experience in the KHL and mature two-way game could give him an opportunity to compete immediately for a bottom-six role.

The Oilers have not confirmed any contract discussions, but Berezkin’s availability after another championship season makes him a player to monitor this summer.
