NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani makes totally unrealistic Knicks prediction for NBA Finals vs. Spurs

Ahead of the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani dropped a bold prediction for the series.

Appearing on HOT97 (via Chris Sommerfeldt on BlueSky), Mamdani is predicting a clean sweep, saying, “Knicks in 4 — Inshallah.”

Is that likely? Not at all. However, as the mayor of the city, it’s understandable that he wants his team to win in dominant fashion. There have only been nine clean sweeps in NBA Finals history, most recently in 2018 when the Kevin Durant-led Golden State Warriors beat the Cleveland Cavaliers.

When do the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals begin?

The 2026 NBA Finals tip off on Wednesday, June 3. The first two games of the series will be played in San Antonio since they finished with the better record during the regular season.

That means that the series comes to New York on Monday, June 8. They will then play Game 4 there on Wednesday, June 10, as well.

San Antonio had a long road to the NBA Finals. While they beat the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs in five games, they were taken to six games by the Minnesota Timberwolves the following round.

The Western Conference Finals went seven games against the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. Ultimately, the Spurs were able to escape in Game 7.

However, the Knicks have had a lot of rest on their way to the Finals. They beat the Atlanta Hawks in six games before sweeping their next two opponents, the Philadelphia 76ers and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Heading into the Finals, they haven’t played since Monday, May 25. They came out sluggish in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals after a similarly long break. However, they were able to come together and come back from being down by 22 points in the fourth quarter.
