Nottingham Forest warned against signing Premier League midfielder as Elliot Anderson replacement

Nottingham Forest legend Stuart Pearce has warned the club against signing wantaway Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall.

The Sweden international recently signaled his intention to leave Tottenham after two years at the club.

Bergvall has informed Tottenham officials of his desire to seek a new challenge after he completed his World Cup duties.

Spurs have made no secret of their intention to bolster their midfield this summer with West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali on their radar.

Bergvall’s exit plan has coincided with Elliot Anderson’s impending British record transfer switch from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City.

And that has opened the door for Bergvall to complete a switch to the City Ground.

The 20-year-old has impressed when called upon by Spurs and recently became the youngest player in history to represent Sweden at a World Cup.

Pearce’s assessment

However, it appears that Pearce needs further convincing over the star’s credentials ahead of a possible summer move to his former club.

“I’m not convinced about him, I’ve got to say,” Pearce told talkSPORT.

“If you’re going to pay a top premium because that money has just come in, Forest are building a new stand next year so I don’t know if this money will be generated to put that up or not.

“But for me, I wouldn’t be paying big money for Bergvall.”

Quizzed on why he is not yet sold on the Swede, Pearce added: “I’m just not convinced about him. He’s been in and out of Tottenham’s team.

“Tottenham have had a good look at him for a couple of years and decided they want to move him on, that sends a message.

“I’m not sure.”

Bergvall was this week pressed on his decision to request a transfer but quickly shot down all talk of his situation at club level.

Sweden first

“Right now, I’m just trying to focus on the World Cup,” he told reporters. “Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup.”

Asked whether his agent had spoken to Tottenham, Bergvall replied: “I’m fully focusing on the World Cup.

“I’m here with Sweden, and we’re going to try to make a good impression in the U.S. Whatever happens after that, we’ll deal with it then.”

Bergvall featured just five times following the arrival of Roberto De Zerbi in March.

In that time, he made just one start and was handed minimal game time from the bench before being an unused substitute in Spurs’ final two Premier League fixtures.
