NHL rumors: Pierre LeBrun hasn’t ruled out potential Zach Werenski trade request

Dylan Larkin shocked the NHL world earlier this offseason. Larkin requested a trade from the Detroit Red Wings. Later, NHL insiders projected that more trade requests from stars would be coming.

Now, there is an update on the status of a friend of Larkin, Columbus Blue Jackets star Zazh Werenski, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

“There’s been much speculation about Zach Werenski in the wake of Larkin’s trade request, perhaps because they’re close friends and fellow Team USA gold medalists. But I can tell you as of Wednesday afternoon, I’m told there has not been any communication to the Columbus Blue Jackets indicating that kind of thing on Werenski, who has two more years on his deal,” LeBrun wrote.

Larkin and Werenski are lifelong friends. They played against each other in the Midget Minor program in Detroit before joining up at Belle Tire. They would then come together at the University of Michigan and be roommates. Since then, they have played together on national teams. Still, Larkin is looking to go to a winning team, something that Werenski has also not experienced.

“Now, having said that, I’m not ready to say that it couldn’t happen before the end of the summer, either, just based on the fact that at some point the team and player will want to talk about the future and whether or not he sees himself in Columbus long term. And I don’t know what the answer to that question would be,” LeBrun continued.

If Werenski were to request a trade, it would be a massive upheaval to the Blue Jackets organization. He is the start for the organization, and still has two years left on his contract.
