NFL rumors: Adam Schefter names 3 QB trade candidates, but Mac Jones isn’t 1 of them

As teams across the NFL looked for a new quarterback, San Francisco 49ers backup Mac Jones seemed to be a prime trade candidate. However, numerous other options have now surpassed him as a realistic option.

Jones is now not expected to be traded, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. Instead, names like Anthony Richardson Sr. of the Indianapolis Colts, Will Levis of the Tennessee Titans and Spencer Rattler of the New Orleans Saints have emerged as potential movers.

“One quarterback not expected to go anywhere is San Francisco’s Mac Jones, whose market never heated up this offseason,” Schefter wrote. “Those who could gain interest include Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr., Titans quarterback Will Levis and Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler.”

The 49ers’ asking price for Jones was deemed too high at points throughout the offseason. Now, it appears San Francisco didn’t receive an off they felt worthwhile. Things can always change in the NFL, but Jones is poised to backup Brock Purdy once again in 2026.

The same can’t be said for the other three names of Schefter’s list. Richardson was passed up by Daniel Jones on the Colts’ depth chart. His new $88 million contract extension will keep him there. Richardson being a former No. 4 overall pick could draft some interest on the trade market.

Levis and Rattler both offer any acquiring team past starting experience. But Cam Ward has passed the former in Tennessee while the latter was replaced by Tyler Shough in New Orleans. Like Richardson, a change of scenery may be their past chance for playing time.

The 2026 NFL Draft will offer teams plenty of opportunities to find quarterbacks. But the Colts, Titans and Saints offer intriguing options. In turn, the 49ers currently aren’t.
