NFL Insider reveals how AJ Brown could elevate Patriots QB Drake Maye’s game

The New England Patriots are hoping that they can build off last year’s trip to the Super Bowl in 2026. While he was an MVP candidate during the regular season, quarterback Drake Maye saw his play fall off a cliff in the playoffs, and he will look to use that as motivation heading into next year.

The Patriots are widely expected to trade for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown at some point in the coming weeks, and recently, NFL insider Booger McFarland of ESPN broke down how he thinks the star could help add to Maye’s game.

“What it does for Drake Maye is give him a bona fide number one, somebody that, regardless of what the coverage is on the play… Drake Maye knows he has someone he can throw the football to… if they do make this trade, I think that’s gonna take Drake Maye’s game to the next level,” said McFarland, per NFL on ESPN on X, formerly Twitter.

Brown is still thought of as one of the top receiving talents in the NFL landscape despite a down season numbers-wise in Philadelphia last year, which many blamed on the Eagles’ bizarre lack of incorporation of the star into their game plan.

If Brown can return to his peak form in New England, it will more than make up for the Patriots’ release of Stefon Diggs earlier this offseason, giving Maye a legit deep ball threat who can also make plays on shorter routes and use his elite athleticism and size to bully smaller defenders.

The Patriots will start out their season in early September with a very difficult test: a Super Bowl rematch against the Seattle Seahawks on the road.
