Netherlands’ rout of Sweden breaks crazy World Cup record

The Netherlands stole the spotlight at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday, routing Sweden 5-1 in Houston and setting a new tournament record in the process.

Ronald Koeman’s side not only climbed to the top of Group F with four points, but also extended their unbeaten World Cup run to 14 matches, the longest streak in tournament history. The Dutch surpassed Brazil’s previous record of 13 games, which had stood since the period between 1958 and 1966. The Netherlands had matched that mark during their 2-2 draw with Japan in their opening group-stage match and moved ahead with the win over Sweden. Their last World Cup defeat came in the 2010 final against Spain, with penalty shootout results counted as draws.

Koeman’s decision to start Brian Brobbey ahead of Crysencio Summerville paid off almost immediately. Brobbey opened the scoring after five minutes by converting a low cross from Cody Gakpo before adding a second goal 12 minutes later from Denzel Dumfries’ delivery. The second strike was particularly significant as it became the Netherlands’ 100th goal in World Cup finals history.

Sweden responded with pressure and even found the net through Gustaf Lagerbielke before halftime, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Any hopes of a comeback disappeared shortly after the break.

Gakpo took control of the contest, scoring twice in the opening stages of the second half. His first came from close range following another Dumfries assist, while his second arrived after a rapid attacking move, with Summerville providing the setup. The Liverpool midfielder now has five goals in seven World Cup appearances and sits just two behind Johnny Rep, the Netherlands’ all-time leading scorer at the finals.

Anthony Elanga gave Sweden something to celebrate when he finished a pass from Alexander Isak just before the hour mark. However, the Dutch restored their four-goal advantage late on as Summerville, who entered at halftime, found the net after also contributing an assist.

It was Sweden’s heaviest World Cup defeat since a 7-1 loss to Brazil in 1950. Despite recording more shots than the Netherlands and enjoying positive spells during the match, Graham Potter’s side could not match the Dutch efficiency in front of goal.

The Netherlands will close their Group F campaign against Tunisia, while Sweden face Japan in their final group-stage fixture.
