NBA rumors: Could Billy Donovan replace Jamahl Mosley as Magic head coach?
The Orlando Magic have picked things up recently, continuing with a comfortable home win over the depleted Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday evening. Still, it’s overall been a disappointing season for the Magic, and Orlando will need some help to avoid having to participate in the play-in tournament for a second straight year.
Some have speculated that head coach Jamahl Mosley could be on the move this offseason, and recently, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints spoke on another current head coach who could be in line to replace him.
“Billy Donovan… there are going to be several teams out there that check in with him about potentially taking over their head coaching vacancy… we could potentially see six, seven, maybe even eight jobs open up this year in the summer for new head coaches in this league,” said Siegel, per ClutchPoints on X, formerly Twitter.
However, Siegel did reiterate that the Bulls would like to keep Donovan past this year despite their struggles, which recently resulted in the team cleaning house in its front office.
Meanwhile, Siegel noted that the Magic would likely have to not only make the playoffs, but also compete and potentially win a series in order for Mosley’s job to be safe. Orlando has parted with heavy assets in order to try to put together a decent roster around Paolo Banchero, but the team’s lack of consistency on a nightly basis has led many to point the finger at Mosley, who would be far easier to get rid of than some of the higher-paid players on the roster.
In any case, the Magic will next hit the floor, coincidentally against Donovan and the Bulls, on Friday evening on the road in Chicago.
