Newcastle United vs Liverpool predictions
Bold new eras are beginning at Newcastle United and Liverpool, but the levels of optimism among both sets of supporters is cautious at best.
In fact, that is probably too generous an interpretation of the views of the St James’ Park faithful.
Eddie Howe’s departure during pre-season was simultaneously surprising and foreseeable. It followed a difficult summer of transfer activity which has seen Newcastle lose three key players in Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon.
Kieran Trippier and Jamaal Lascelles, two leaders on and off the field, have also departed, and Nick Pope could be on his way out too.
Matthias Jaissle has inherited a difficult situation, not least because Newcastle’s Saudi owners appear to have lost interest in what was always a peripheral investment.
The situation at Liverpool is brighter, although some fans are frustrated that the club has not done more in the transfer market.
Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson have exited, with Victor Munoz, Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo the three arrivals to date.
Andoni Iraola has been tasked with reintroducing the sort of high-energy style of play with which Jurgen Klopp had so much success at Anfield, but the former Bournemouth head coach has never managed a club of this size before.
A victory over Newcastle on Sunday would represent a solid start to his Liverpool tenure.
Newcastle United vs Liverpool tips
Newcastle United host Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.
Liverpool start as favourites
Liverpool have a formidable recent record against Newcastle United, avoiding defeat in each of their last 19 Premier League meetings with the Magpies.
That sort of run can come to an end at any point, but Liverpool deserve to be favourites for Sunday’s showdown.
Newcastle are unlikely to be at full strength until later in the campaign. They are still working to bring players to the club before the transfer window closes, while Matthias Jaissle has been in the building for only two weeks.
Liverpool should have too much for Newcastle on matchday one of 2026/27.

While we expect Liverpool to come out on top at St James’ Park, they are unlikely to have everything their own way.
Even though Newcastle’s squad is weaker now than it was at the end of last season (which was itself disappointing), they still have some players who will ask questions of the Liverpool backline.
The Reds were far from defensively secure last term and they could be vulnerable early on this season too, as the players adjust to Andoni Iraola’s demands.
Goals at both ends is the way to go, and we do not envisage this match finishing with the score level.

Will Isak haunt former club?
Alexander Isak’s debut season at Liverpool did not go to plan. The Sweden international was poor early on, then suffered a serious injury which kept him out until April.
Liverpool fans will hope that Isak shows his class this season. If he can replicate his Newcastle United form at Anfield, he will be a huge success.
The jury is out for now, however, so Isak could do with a positive start to the campaign in order to boost his confidence.
His every touch will be booed on Sunday, but Isak will look to use that as fuel.
