After spending the past two seasons at Livingston College, the senior arrives at Division I outfit Mississippi Valley State for the 2026 season.

When ‘Big Dave’ takes to the field, the defensive lineman will be one of the heaviest players on the field, weighing in at a whopping 425 pounds.

Hailing from Georgia, Jones played for Hephzibah High School near Augusta, where he played as both an offensive guard and a defensive tackle.

There, he was named a First Team All-Region player as a senior in 2021 after ranking third on the team in defense with 62 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Although he received offers from multiple Division III and NAIA teams, Jones opted to go down the route of attending junior college, first attending Gordon State College.

There, he played two seasons in 2022 and 2023 as a defensive lineman where he weighed in at 375 pounds.

But Jones’ circumstances changed, leading him to return back to Georgia in 2024 where he took up a 9-to-5 job with UPS.

He didn’t give up his dream of playing football, however, using any spare moment to email coaches from other schools all around the country.

“Every Sunday, [we] emailed every coach starting from Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi,” Jones told HBCU Gameday back in January.

“All the way from D1 to D3… and we did that every day consistently.”

Eventually, he caught the attention of Livingston College assistant coach Mark Williams, and within 30 minutes of receiving Jones’ initial introductory email, the pair had arranged a campus visit.

In two seasons for the Blue Bears, Jones featured in eight games, where he had 14 tackles and one tackle for loss, as well as one fumble recovery.

Betting on himself

Viewed as a disruptor on defense, opposing coaches often opted to down the route of double-teaming the lineman in efforts to try and prevent him from making a play.

If he didn’t, his linebackers would be there free.

“If you don’t double me and you try to run the ball, that’s my play to make,” he said. “If you do double me, I know my linebackers are free.”

During his time at Livingstone, he was also utilized on offense sparingly, where he finished with three rushing scores in the 2025 season.

Having entered the transfer portal over the last offseason, Jones will finally get his opportunity to play Div I football for the Delta Devils, where he has chosen to gamble on himself.

“I’m not going nowhere where, cool, they got all the glitz and cameras,” Jones said. I’m going somewhere where I feel like I’m wanted and I know I can bring a change to the program. …

“This will be my third school I’m going to. All I know is, ‘okay, Dave, you gotta go bet on yourself’.

“I’m just trying to really go feed my family. Football, really a business right now.”

There, he will have a maximum of two years of collegiate eligibility due to the NCAA‘s rules on junior college eligibility to showcase his skillset and attributes.
