NBA rumors: Clippers will hold DeMar DeRozan interest once Kings dump him

The Los Angeles Clippers have a busy few weeks ahead of them, starting with Tuesday night’s NBA Draft, which is slated to take place in Brooklyn. The Clippers have the number five overall pick in this year’s draft thanks to last year’s trade of Ivica Zubac to the Indiana Pacers.

Recently, NBA insider Michael Scotto of Hoophype reported on the latest intel surrounding the Clippers, including their reported interest in an NBA veteran who could soon become a free agent.

“…In the midst of a rebuild and over the first apron, barring an unexpected trade, the Sacramento Kings are expected to waive-and-stretch forward DeMar DeRozan,” reported Scotto. “…Should DeRozan enter free agency as expected, the Los Angeles Clippers are expected to have interest in the California native, HoopsHype has learned.”

DeRozan is from the Los Angeles area and has been linked to both the Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers at various points throughout his career. While he’s not the same player he was during his prime years with the Toronto Raptors and San Antonio Spurs, DeRozan remains a serviceable bucket-getter who can hit tough shots when the offense breaks down, and has continued to expand his range out to the three-point line in recent seasons.

In Los Angeles, DeRozan would provide some much-needed perimeter playmaking next to Kawhi Leonard and Darius Garland, and likely wouldn’t be tasked with too heavy of a burden at this stage of his career. The Clippers would also likely be able to sign him to a much team-friendlier deal than the one he’s currently on.

In any case, NBA free agency is slated to open up on June 30.
