NBA rumors: Celtics named as potential Giannis trade suitor after eye-opening Joe Mazzulla comments
It’s really anyone’s guess as to where Giannis Antetokounmpo will end up. It’s the question that’s plagued the league all season. Various teams have been thrown out, but not the Boston Celtics until now.
Recently, Giannis made flattering comments about Joe Mazzulla’s coaching in Boston. Thus, leading to speculation that perhaps the Celtics will look to acquire Giannis in a trade, per Sam Amick of The Athletic.
However, Giannis himself has said that he seeks to work something out with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks are also trying to keep a tight lid on his future.
Nevertheless, Giannis has wondered if he had missed the boat to go elsewhere.
“Everything about my decision is based on winning, culture,” Antetokounmpo, who has one season left on his contract, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in an interview that was published on Monday. “Like you saw, I talked with coach Joe Mazzulla. I said, ‘You had so many opportunities to make excuses, but you didn’t.’ ”
Even with Jayson Tatum injured most of the year, the Celtics remain one of the top teams. Currently, they are 54-25, second-best in the East, and on a four-game winning streak.
In his conversation with Mazzulla, Giannis mentioned that Mazzulla’s mind-over-matter approach to coaching is the brains behind the operation.
“And (Mazzulla) said, ‘Oh, they’re good players,’ ” Antetokounmpo continued. “I said, ‘No. It’s about the mentality that you instilled in your place.’
Lately, Giannis has been absent due to a lingering knee injury. He’s played 36 games and is averaging 27.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.
