MLB rumors: Red Sox strike out in Elly De La Cruz trade pursuit

The Boston Red Sox are in the market for a shortstop at the MLB trade deadline, and Elly De La Cruz has been atop their priority list. Despite the big aspirations, the Cincinnati Reds have made it clear that they are not trading their star middle infielder, as reported by MassLive’s Sean McAdam.

“According to a league source, the Red Sox offered a package mostly made up of prospects for de la Cruz, 24. The offer wasn’t enough to tempt the Reds, who were more interested in young major leaguers,” wrote McAdam, who continued that, “the Red Sox told the Reds that they weren’t willing to subtract from their major league roster in order to make a deal.”

Although Red Sox fans were likely salivating at the idea of de la Cruz lacing them up at Fenway, it is clear that this is a reality that will not come to fruition. However, the Red Sox are still not giving up in their pursuit of other shortstops around the league.

“Among the shortstops linked to them: Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels; C.J. Abrams of the Washington Nationals and Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins,” reports McAdam before mentioning that the Marlins “are highly unlikely to move Lopez in any trade.”

Obviously, the Red Sox are doing their due diligence on filling the void left by Trevor Story, and fittingly so given their recent hot play. Although the Red Sox might upgrade at shortstop before the MLB trade deadline on Monday, it can be determined that it won’t be Elly De La Cruz suiting up between second and third.
