Red Sox rumors: Boston locked in on trading for a shortstop

The streaking Boston Red Sox have high hopes that their recent winning ways will translate to the final two months of the regular season as well as the postseason. The Red Sox are likely to make a key move or two prior to Monday’s trade deadline.

One of those moves is likely to occur at shortstop. While Andruw Monasterio played a key role in Boston’s 21-4 run during July with a series of big hits, it seems likely that the Red Sox will pursue a shortstop to join the team for the season’s most crucial months.

The Red Sox lost starting shortstop Trevor Story in May after he underwent surgery for a sports hernia. While there is some talk that Story could return to the team some time in August, the Red Sox are not going to count on it.

They are giving strong consideration to three shortstops, including C.J. Abrams of the Washington Nationals, Zach Neto of the Los Angeles Angels and Otto Lopez of the Miami Marlins.

Abrams has been one of the leaders of the Nationals’ outstanding offense as he has already blasted 28 home runs this season. Neto has also shown that he can drive the ball out of the park with 19 home runs this season. Lopez has been having a brilliant season as he is slashing .322/.346/.481 with 9 home runs and 50 runs batted in. He leads the National League in hits with 138 and doubles with 27.

The Red Sox completed a trade with the Nationals last week when they sent talented young pitcher Connelly Early to Washington for infielder Curtis Mead. The Red Sox suffered a blow as Mead suffered a broken wrist in his second at bat with the team.
