Yankees make immediate roster move after Camilo Doval trade

The New York Yankees have wasted no time in promoting a minor-league pitcher after trading reliever Camilo
Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday.

The Yankees have promoted Yovanny Cruz to the parent club, according to MLB insider Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Cruz has been a dominant reliever at the minor league level. He has made 31 appearances so far and he has a 7-3 record along with a 3.53 earned run average. Cruz features an overpowering fastball as he has struck out 52 batters in 35.2 innings.

Cruz should get an opportunity to show what he can do quite soon because he is taking the place of an accomplished pitcher in Doval.

Doval is a six-year MLB veteran and the 28-year-old has spent the last two seasons with the Yankees. Doval has a 3-1 record this season and he has finished 10 games to this point. He had a 4.54 ERA and he has had mixed results this season.

He had his best season in 2023 when he had a 2.93 ERA while pitching for the San Francisco Giants and made the National League All-Star team. The Pirates are hoping Doval can repeat that kind of success during the final two months of the regular season.

The Yankees received a pair of prospects from the Pirates in return for Doval. The Pirates sent catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz to the Yankees and both will perform at the minor league level.

The Yankees have confidence that Cruz can do a solid job out of the bullpen, but it’s clear that general manager Brian Cashman has more work to do prior to Monday’s trade deadline.
