Former Jackson State football player passes away in car accident

Former Jackson State defensive back Levi Wyatt Jr. has died following a car accident in Vicksburg, Mississippi, according to a report from Vicksburg News and a statement shared by his family on social media.

Family friend Cara Payne Roberson announced Wyatt’s passing in a Facebook post shared with the family’s permission.

“With the permission of the family, I’m saddened to share that heaven gained an angel tonight. Levi Wyatt Jr. passed following an automobile accident. As expected, at this time the family is in shock and completely heartbroken. We ask that you hold phone calls at this time to his mother to allow her time to process this tragedy. We appreciate your prayers,” Roberson wrote.

Wyatt was a standout football player throughout his career in Mississippi before reaching the Division I level. He began his prep career at Vicksburg High School, later attended Hillcrest Christian, and finished at Holmes County Central, where he starred as a dual-threat quarterback. During his senior season, Wyatt threw for 1,226 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding 150 rushing yards and another score.

After high school, Wyatt made the transition from quarterback to defensive back at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. As a freshman in 2021, he appeared in eight games, recording 12 tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception. He also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown during a victory over Holmes. Although injuries limited him to four games the following season, he earned an opportunity to continue his career at the Division I level.

Wyatt transferred to McNeese State, where he became one of the top defensive backs in the Southland Conference. In 2023, he started all 10 games, finishing with 13 tackles and a team-high seven pass breakups. He followed that campaign with 33 tackles, two tackles for loss, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble in 2024, earning second-team All-Southland Conference honors.

For his final collegiate season, Wyatt returned to his home state to join Jackson State under head coach T.C. Taylor. He contributed 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, and four pass breakups during the Tigers’ 2025 season as Jackson State finished with a 9-3 record.

After completing his degree at Jackson State, Wyatt announced that he planned to pursue a professional football career by entering the 2026 NFL, UFL and CFL draft process.
