MLB rumors: Insider’s surprising Tarik Skubal trade opinion comes with Braves take

The expectation around the MLB world is that Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal will be moved before the MLB trade deadline. Nothing is guaranteed, but a deal seems likely since Skubal is set to enter free agency after the season. The Atlanta Braves have been mentioned as a suitor for Skubal. MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently shared a surprising take on a potential Skubal trade while also linking the Braves to the pitcher, via Foul Territory.

“Let’s face it, the Dodgers don’t need him, they’re doing quite well without him,” Nightengale said. “… The Yankees, they don’t need him. They got Max Fried coming back. Both teams, it would be a luxury. That way, it’s wide open… I don’t think the price tag is going to be as high as people think. That’s why I think Atlanta kind of lays low in the weeds here and have a good chance to grab this guy.

“I think you put him on Atlanta’s team, they got a chance to win it all.”

The surprising element of Nightengale’s take is that he does not expect the price tag for Skubal to be as high as people think. Sure, Skubal may be a rental for a couple of months, but he has won back-to-back Cy Young awards and is arguably the best pitcher in the game. The Tigers are going to want an attention-grabbing return for him. Still, the half-season rental element of the situation could possibly lead to a lower trade cost, but a Skubal deal still won’t be cheap.

The Braves, though, certainly make sense as a landing destination.
