Mets star Juan Soto reveals what impresses him most about Carson Benge
The New York Mets snapped a five-game losing streak Wednesday night, and Carson Benge helped make Juan Soto’s latest comments feel timely.
The Mets took down the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 at Citi Field, avoiding a three-game sweep and improving to 23-33 after a difficult offensive stretch. Before Wednesday, the Mets scored just two runs or fewer in six straight games. Soto opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning, and Eric Wagaman followed with another solo shot in his first at-bat with the club in the second.
Carson Benge delivered the decisive runs while trying to break out of a 1-for-20 slump. The rookie right fielder had shaved his mustache before the game in search of a reset, and the change came before one of his better nights during his first season in the majors.
The performance added context to Soto’s remarks relating to the 23-year-old’s development Wednesday at Citi Field. SNY Mets shared a video on X, formerly Twitter, of the six-time Silver Slugger discussing the rookie during his media availability.

The remark carried weight because Soto, one of baseball’s most accomplished hitters, was identifying traits that can help a young player handle major league pitching. Benge earned his Opening Day roster spot after batting .366 with an .874 OPS in Grapefruit League play, and manager Carlos Mendoza named him the starting right fielder March 23 after the Mets selected him 19th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.
New York also held on with a patchwork pitching plan. Huascar Brazoban opened with a scoreless inning, Jonah Tong threw 3 2/3 innings in bulk relief, and Devin Williams escaped a bases-loaded ninth by striking out the final two batters for his eighth save.
For a Mets club still working through a disappointing first two months, the response from the rookie slugger offered a much-needed positive.
