Mets rumors: Insider calls Bo Bichette trade ‘highly unlikely’ before deadline

The New York Mets’ nightmare 2026 season continues. They might be coming off a 7-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, but they are still in dead last in the NL East with a 27-35 record. This season has not even come close to going according to plan for the Mets, with injury woes and severe underperformance taking a team that entered the season with the desire to bounce back from last season’s collapse.

There are still 100 games remaining in the regular season for the Mets, but trade season is coming up fast and New York will have to make some tough roster decisions soon. If they continue to struggle, which is very likely considering the mess the team is in right now, they probably will become a selling ballclub at the trade deadline.

However, Mets insider Chelsea James of SNY does not believe that New York will be inclined to trade away their huge pickup this past offseason in Bo Bichette.

“I do not see them trading Bichette. I guess if they totally swoon between now and then and are totally, completely, irrevocably out of it, that could maybe be on the table. But with his salary and the fact that he has yet to produce anywhere near where he normally does, that seems highly unlikely,” James wrote on her mailbag.

The Mets aren’t quite willing to pull the plug on the Bichette experiment quite yet, and it’s not like other teams will be lining up to poach him from their hands. He’s just in the first year of his contract, and considering how he’s underperformed thus far, it’s likely for him to opt into his contract for the next two years worth a total of $110 million.

Bichette has endured a nightmare 2026 season, as he is currently sporting an OPS of .590. Perhaps he is not healthy the way he was in 2024 when he stunk it up for the Toronto Blue Jays in similar fashion. And that alone would tank his trade value considerably in addition to all the struggles he’s already showing on the diamond.
