Mets’ Clay Holmes takes step forward amid injury recovery

As the New York Mets lost to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, 10-5, marking the team’s fifth straight loss, the ball club received some positive injury news regarding pitcher Clay Holmes. While the Mets deal with injuries to Jorge Polanco, Juan Soto, and others, Holmes’ latest step shows a sign of progress.

After sustaining a fractured right fibula after taking a line drive to the area, he has missed a significant amount of time, but he was seen doing some throwing at Citi Field on Thursday ahead of the series finale against the Cubs.

“Clay Holmes does some throwing at Citi Field,” SNY Mets wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

This season with New York, Holmes has recorded a 2.39 ERA to go along with 45 strikeouts and a 4-4 record in nine games, which has shown how effective he could be. In turn, this has led Holmes to be in rumors ahead of August’s trade deadline, as he spoke Monday about being in speculation, which he downplays and focuses more on the team.

“I think it’d be doing a disservice to the group I’m here with now,” Holmes said, according to The New York Post. “These are my teammates. I care a lot about the people in this room, and that not [having] my full attention on coming back and helping this team would be a disservice to this team and these guys.”

“I want to help them out, so I’m invested in these people. I’m working as hard as I can to get back and help the people in this room out,” Holmes continued.

At any rate, it remains to be seen when Holmes returns for the Mets and if the team with a 34-46 record, last in the NL East, would trade him elsewhere.
