Orioles’ Pete Alonso gets real about backing up talk after big game vs. Rangers

The Baltimore Orioles needed a win over the Texas Rangers on Sunday in the worst way. Baltimore had lost five of their last seven games. If they wanted to stay in the race for the AL Wild Card, a victory on Sunday was essential. Thankfully, veteran slugger Pete Alonso came through.

Alonso strode to the plate five times against Texas, reaching safely in every plate appearance. He walked twice, swatted two home runs, and drove in four runs. Baltimore won 10-5, and that performance was a vital one for Alonso, as he explained after the game.

“You can’t talk and be vocal if you’re not doing it. For me, you’ve got to do it, and then you talk afterwards whenever there’s time. But also, in order to be a leader, who have to have done it and continuously be doing it,” the Orioles star said, via Andy Kostka of Diamondback Sports.

Alonso is not producing the elite numbers he did last season with the New York Mets. Still, his first season in Baltimore is going quite well for him on an individual level. The veteran slugger has 25 home runs, 75 RBI, and a .252/.346/.472 slash line in 118 games thus far.

The Orioles, as a whole, could be much better. Their win on Sunday improved their record to 57-61. Despite the unfortunate record, they remain just two games back of a Wild Card berth in the AL.

Baltimore certainly needed this win and will need to continue this momentum moving forward. The Orioles begin a three-game set against a Wild Card rival in the Minnesota Twins on Monday.
