Mavericks rumors: Terry Stotts among 5 known candidates to replace Jason Kidd
The Dallas Mavericks are still in search of a new head coach, and things seem to be trending upward on their list of possible candidates. As of now, they have five options, with one of them being veteran coach Terry Stotts, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
“The Mavericks are also said to be progressing in their search with interviews ongoing through the weekend,” Stein wrote. “Known candidates to this point in Dallas include Nori, Houston’s Royal Ivey, Toronto’s Jama Mahlalela, Boston’s Tony Dobbins and former Hawks, Bucks and Blazers head coach Terry Stotts. It’s believed that the team’s initial overtures to Michigan’s Dusty May and Duke’s Jon Scheyer never went any farther than an exploratory stage.”
Stotts may be the one coach on the list with the most experience, and he would be a good option for a young team like the Mavericks. For the past few years, Stotts has been an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors. The last time he was a head coach was with the Portland Trail Blazers, from 2012 to 2021.
As for the rest of the candidates, they’ve been mostly in assistant coach roles throughout their careers. It seems as if the Mavericks would be fine with hiring a younger coach to help build with the team, which is not a bad idea. Micah Nori has shown his ability to be a head coach when he took over for Chris Finch for part of the postseason in 2o24.
With the draft coming up in the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see who the Mavericks decide to choose and if they plan to make the hire before then.
The Mavericks will have the No. 9 pick in this year’s draft after selecting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick last year.
