Mariners calling up $95 million top prospect who’s 6th on MLB Pipeline Top 100
The Seattle Mariners are looking to avoid a series sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Before the game, and with Cal Raleigh on the injured list, Seattle made a move to fire up the fans. The Mariners have called up top prospect Colt Emerson, who signed a $95 million contract before making his MLB debut earlier this year.
“Per sources, the Mariners are calling up Colt Emerson. He’s on his way to Seattle,” Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reported. This was shortly after the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers updated their lineup to take Emerson out. He was slated to hit second and play shortstop for the minor-league club.
Emerson ranks sixth in MLB.com’s Pipeline rankings. He is just ahead of Kade Anderson, a left-handed pitcher also in Seattle’s system. In Tacoma this year, Emerson is hitting .255 with a .816 OPS and 26 RBI in 38 games. With Raleigh on the shelf, the Mariners’ offense has struggled. That’s why they’re bringing up the prospect now, as the American League West is wide open.
Emerson landed an eight-year, $95 million deal in March amid a slew of pre-arbitration contracts. The Pittsburgh Pirates did the same with Konnor Griffin, and the Detroit Tigers gave Kevin McGonigle a massive deal. This is also not the first contract of its type in Mariners history. Julio Rodriguez signed a 12-year deal after his rookie season.
The Mariners have lost the first two games of their series with the Padres. If Emerson makes his debut in the series finale, it will be on national television as part of NBC’s Sunday Night Baseball.
