Maple Leafs’ John Chayka’s statement on Darren Raddysh trade will fire fans up

The NHL offseason got a big jolt when the Toronto Maple Leafs traded for Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Now, general manager John Chayka has made a statement that will fire fans up, according to David Pagnotta.

“Leafs GM John Chayka: “We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren’s caliber to our organization. Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier two-way defensemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team,” Pagnotta wrote on X.

It’s been a busy week in Toronto, as the Maple Leafs hired a new coach. Prior to that, the Leafs traded away John Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers. After missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Maple Leafs are making some wholesale changes.

Raddysh netted 22 goals and 70 total points, both career highs. Before that, his highest point total was 37, which he achieved in the 2024-25 season. In addition to the trade, the Leafs have also given Raddysh an eight-year contract extension, keeping him in Toronto until the end of the 2033-34 season.

The Maple Leafs might seek more trades as they look to bolster their blue line. Last season, Toronto was the second-worst team in goals allowed. Their decision to move Woll, along with the acquisition of Raddysh, indicates a stronger effort to fortify that. There could be more deals coming as the Maple Leafs look to improve and find a way to bounce back. Raddysh will look to replicate his stats from this past season and bring the same skillset to Toronto.
