Man City inflict Liverpool’s heaviest FA Cup defeat in 80 years as records tumble in brutal mauling
Liverpool fell to their heaviest FA Cup defeat in 80 years as they were thumped 4-0 by Manchester City.
Erling Haaland fired in a hat-trick to send the Citizens into a record consecutive eighth FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Records galore
It proved a humiliating afternoon from start to finish for the Reds, who fell to a new low in a total demolition.
This marked their worst loss in the competition since January 1946, when they were thumped 5-0 by Bolton.
It piles the pressure on Arne Slot, whose side head into their Champions League quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday with confidence at an all-time low.
Meanwhile, it was an historic afternoon of a different kind for Man City, who shattered four records in a scintillating win.
This was their 18th straight home victory in the FA Cup, marking it the longest streak of this kind by any side in the competition proper.
The Citizens shattered Clapham Rovers’ previous record, who claimed 17 consecutive wins on home turf between 1873 and 1881.
Meanwhile, the FA Cup rout also saw them extend their winning streak against Liverpool to three successive games, having already completed the league double this season.
In doing so, City achieved an 89-year first, having last gone on the same run in March 1937, which later became a four wins in a row.
Rounding off their catalogue of records from Saturday afternoon, City have now also reached 14 domestic cup semi-finals since Guardiola took charge in 2016, more than any other side.
Demolition job
City were totally dominant in their record-breaking win over the Reds, having got their noses in front in the 39th minute.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot and then headed home a second on the stroke of half-time.
There was no let-up for Liverpool in the second half, with Antoine Semenyo making it 3-0 on 50 minutes.
Haaland then added insult to injury moments later, as he rounded off a fine team move to bag his hat-trick.
This was the Norwegian’s 12th treble since joining City in 2022, and saw him hit the 30-goal mark in all competitions for the season.
To rub salt in Liverpool’s wounds, Mohamed Salah then passed up a chance to regain some pride.
The Reds were awarded a penalty after Matheus Nunes clumsily caught Hugo Ekitike inside the box, only for Salah to see his spot-kick saved by James Trafford.

This rounded off a miserable afternoon for visitors, who are at risk of seeing their season totally fall apart.
Arne Slot’s side travel European champions PSG in midweek for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, and will have to regroup quickly if they are to get a positive result.
Meanwhile, they find themselves locked in a serious battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Liverpool sit fifth in the Premier League table, in what is expected to be the final qualification spot for the competition, but are only a point ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea.
