Mainz vs Bayern Munich predictions
It had long been a matter of when rather than if Bayern Munich would be crowned Bundesliga champions, but it was a slight surprise that the title was secured last weekend.
Had Borussia Dortmund won at home to Hoffenheim, the wait would have gone on regardless of Bayern Munich’s result against
As it was, Dortmund slipped up last Saturday, going down 2-1 to Hoffenheim at Signal Iduna Park. That paved the way for Bayern to seal the deal the following day.
Characteristically, they did it by scoring multiple goals. A 4-2 victory over Stuttgart made Vincent Kompany’s men uncatchable at the summit of the standings. For the second season in a row, Kompany has led Bayern to Bundesliga glory.
Of course, winning the title is expected in Bavaria given the financial advantages Bayern enjoy. But it would be churlish to underplay the dominance displayed by Kompany’s charges throughout this campaign.
A record of 25 wins, four draws and one defeat speaks for itself. Bayern could yet equal the all-time Bundesliga points tally of 91, set by Jupp Heyckes’ side in 2012/13.
Mainz have little to play for in the final few weeks of the season. With an eight-point deficit, they are too far adrift of the top eight to be in the European conversation. The same gap separates Mainz from the relegation play-off spot, so they will not be going down this term.
Anything they get from this meeting with the champions is a bonus, although Mainz did avoid defeat by Bayern in the reverse fixture, drawing 2-2 at the Allianz Arena in December.
Mainz vs Bayern Munich betting tips
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich return to action against Mainz this weekend.
No stopping Bayern juggernaut
Mainz will hope that, with the Bundesliga title in the bag, Bayern Munich are ready to remove their foot from the accelerator. But they are likley to be disappointed.
Kompany’s side are relentless and it is hard to see them taking things easy when there are still records to chase.
Even if Bayern ring the changes ahead of the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, a rotated side is capable of doing substantial damage to Mainz.
Twenty of Bayern’s 25 victories this season have been by a two-goal margin or more, and this one will probably follow suit.

More goals in a Bayern game
Bayern Munich have already smashed the record for the most goals in a Bundesliga season.
With four matches to spare, the Bavarians have beaten opposition goalkeepers 109 times, a preposterous tally which illustrates this team’s attacking potency.
Each of Bayern’s last four Bundesliga fixtures have featured at least four goals. Across the season as a whole, there have been over 3.5 goals in more than three-quarters of their contests, with an overall average of 4.6 per 90 minutes.
Mainz’s matches have not been quite as fruitful, but it will be Bayern who control the pattern of this game, not die Nullfunfer.
That usually means goals galore – good news for the neutrals, if not necessarily for the Mainz defence.
Tip over 3.5 goals at 6/5 with SBK
Kane’s deputy to step up again
Bayern Munich continue to carefully manage Harry Kane’s troublesome ankle, so the England captain will probably be held back for the upcoming PSG clash.
That will afford Nicolas Jackson another chance to strut his stuff from the first whistle this weekend.
The Senegal international has played second fiddle to Kane throughout the campaign, but he has proved to be an able deputy following his switch from Chelsea last summer.
Jackson has scored 16 goals for club and country this term, including two in his last two appearances in the Bundesliga. He is our pick to make the net bulge when Kompany takes his team to Mainz on Saturday.
